The restrictions on home renovations designed to reduce the amount of lead dust would come into effect from April 22. These restrictions were implemented by the New Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to the new rule, the contractors had to be lead-safe certified and many are not. This would cause higher costs for the consumers. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates that the new rule would affect 68 percent of all U.S. homes.
The government hasn't given the industry time to train remodelers in the necessary techniques, argues the NAHB and retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe's. They are urging the Congress to delay implementation of the new rules.
